Amethyst Stone
The name 'amethyst' comes from the Greek amethystos (not drunk), since this stone was considered a powerful antidote to drunkenness. Amethyst has been known for miles of years, as already in ancient Egypt it was used to create jewelry, personal stamps and carvings. In the Middle Ages, Christianity adopted amethyst as a symbol of renunciation of earthly goods and chastity, and it is still worn today in the form of rings by many cardinals and bishops. Amethyst also symbolizes divine wisdom.
When it is bright and intense in color, amethyst is the most appreciated variety of quartz. The most perfect amethysts are carved for jewelry, and the rest are used to make art objects or directly, as mineral specimens, for decoration or collecting. Due to its diffusion as a gem, there are several terms used in jewelry to describe the different shades of amethyst. "Rose of France" refers to amethyst with a light lilac color, while "Siberian" is amethyst with a deep violet color with red flashes, the most appreciated variety. There are also gems that are a natural mixture with areas between amethyst and citrine, which have been given the name Ametrino or Bolivianite. Finally, heated amethyst, which takes on a yellowish hue, is often traded as citrine (a naturally rare variety of amber-colored quartz).
The are many characteristic that Amethysts have been thought to have. Centuries ago, ancient healers believed Amethyst could help their psychic thoughts and intuitions. Some people thought the Amethyst power could heal headaches or insomnia. This stone was also thought to give the wearer a feeling of calm and happiness.
Amethyst has been a prized gem for centuries. It is the birthstone for Pisces and the month of February, and the gemstone for the 6th anniversary of marriage.
